A new project from the charity WaterAid has revealed what women from around the globe pack in their maternity bags. From a razor blade to cut the umbilical cord to plastic sheets for the hospital bed, these photos show the startling contrast of birthing essentials around the world.

Her bag includes: clothes, a flask, a bottle of water and food. Zaituni also brought a bucket and basin with her to the hospital.

“The baby has no clothes. We are just wrapping her with cloths. When they are dirty my sister washes them. The water is not safe. It looks milky.”
